How I Discovered This Healthy Energy Drink
 
 
My wife and I were at a big box discount store. We were by the drink section when she found Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Natural Energy Drink. Bragg is famous for their organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the mother. The mother is the organic stuff at the bottom of the glass bottle. Be sure to shake it up before using it.
 
 
We bought a case of it. We liked it. The honey cut the sharp taste of the raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar. I'd been drinking apple cider vinegar straight every morning because it's supposed to have a lot of health benefits including high blood pressure and reduction of kidney stones (not verified by the FDA).

Equipment and Ingredients for Your Homemade Healthy Energy Drink
 
 
Now folks, don't go cheap on these ingredients. You are what you absorb. You're talking to a very frugal guy right now and even I've noticed the difference between cheap and healthy.

Electric Water Kettle
 
This is one of the coolest kitchen utility time savers my wife ever bought. I fill it up with water before going to bed. In the morning my first move is to the kitchen, I turn on the electric water kettle, go about getting ready for the day and within five minutes the electric water kettle got the water boiling and turned itself off! I keep hot water in it during the evening for hot honey water or hot apple cider vinegar and honey in the evening.
 
Hot Travel Mug
 
 
You need a travel mug with a large opening for one of the ingredients. My experience taught me a small opening to drink your homemade healthy energy drink  will get clogged.
 
Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother
 
 
I don't measure the amount of apple cider vinegar I use. I basically just give the bottle a tip.
 
 Raw Honey
 
 
Honey's like Chia seeds. It has so many health benefits I'd sound like a commercial listing them (not proven by the FDA blah blah blah). I have a sweet tooth so I do a six thousand count when I'm squeezing out the honey (about six seconds).
 
 
Chia Seeds
 
 
Speaking of chia seeds that, is the third ingredient. I use two tablespoons of chia seeds. Chia seeds lowered my blood pressure. As a martial artist since 1973 I was taking glucosamine chondroitin for my knees. After one month of drinking chia seeds in lots of water I was able to get off the glucosamine. These are my beliefs not substantiated by the FDA.
 
 
Now remember earlier when I told you not to go cheap with your health. This is one of those cases. There are all kinds of crap chia seeds out there. This, per my experience, is the best proprietary blend of chia seeds out there. If Amazon still has it then the link will work.
 
 
When you put all this together you get a hot, healthy beverage which will give you the energy you need to do what you do best! Kick butt! In business, socially and your personal life!

I've Always Told My Public and Private Self-Defense Students...

Because you may be attacked from two sides and believe me when I tell you, two muggers who may do this to you have done it before and have had a lot of practice!
 
 
Two Stories About Being Attacked from Two Sides...
 
 
A martial arts buddy of mine was walking down a sidewalk with his wife when he noticed two intense looking people walking on either side of the sidewalk so he and his wife would have to walk between them.
 
 
My martial arts friend didn't wait, the perceived threat was there, survival first, the law later according to my friend, he hit the first guy with a  hooking roundhouse like elbow strike right in the jaw and put him down. The other guy swung on my friend. My friend ducked and smashed the guy right in the face with his fist. My friend and his wife took off running. Later when they were clear my friend's wife began yelling at him for what he did. He let her vent and later she apologized and said she understood what he did.
 
 
My Second Story Has an Even Better Self-Defense Technique in It...
 
 
I was teaching self-defense publicly at a park in a small town in Illinois called Arthur. As part of my self-defense lessons we would role play different scenarios and critique them. One self-defense drill we did was called Walk The Street. My self-defense students formed two lines facing each other. One or more students would be picked by me to start at one end. The selected students would turn their backs while I selected picked one or more students to attack. I'd say walk and they'd turn and walk. Sometimes the role play was more precise.
 
 
One of the more precise self-defense scenarios involved two self-defense students acting as muggers in this very martial arts article topic.
 
 
One day one of my self-defense students walked up to me and thanked me.
 
 
"What for?", I said.
 
 
She explained to me she had recently been in Decatur Illinois walking down the sidewalk when she noticed two men walking on either side of the sidewalk so she would have to walk between them.
 
 
Without thinking about what she was doing she immediately crossed the street to the other sidewalk! She won the battle without having to fight!

Martial Arts Internal Energy Strike Article by Sensei J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc. 
 
 
"You must burn your hands in this secret potion my son, sit under the water fall for 15 minutes, and do these secret breathing techniques." Bull! I have heard explanations even from honest martial arts instructors that sound mystical, "You must allow the ki (chi, bio-energy) to flow through the arm and into your attacker's body.", but I hold that to the way it was explained to them and not having a background in exercise physiology such as I do or their path of research following a more easterly direction. Before many of my martial arts friends get mad at me for this statement, as a teacher with a background in physical education, I believe it is important for my students to understand the physics behind a martial arts technique as much as possible. I believe it allows them to improve their martial arts techniques even faster if they understand what they are striving for physically. 
 
 
 
 
 
It takes practice yes, but as opposed to what some instructors would lead you to believe, there is nothing mystical about internal energy strikes. It is a strike like any other, based on physiological principles. So why do I still call it an internal energy strike? It is simply a term with which martial artists are familiar and the shortest one I can think of. My students begin learning the basics of internal energy strikes within their first month. Although all the internal energy strike drills do for them in the beginning is to increase their striking power. Later on, at blue belt level, they learn how to execute internal energy strikes more rapidly since they have already been introduced to some of the drills. 
 
 
Internal energy strikes involve proper breathing, proper coordinated movement, stability, and proper use of antagonistic and agonistic muscles.

Have any of you ever seen a boxing match and heard the boxer breath out explosively through his nose? This is done for a two fold purpose, to increase the power of the punch and prepare the boxer's body if he takes a blow. If your health allows you to, try throwing a punch while holding your breath. Now throw the same punch while exhaling hard. Did you notice a difference in the power and speed? Similar breathing is done during the internal energy strike, with the exception that you continue to breath out as long as you are following through. Visa versa continuing to breath out helps to prolong your follow through and do more damage to your attacker. Now let me stop right here and tell you that you should not try any of these techniques or drills without the guidance of a good instructor. Furthermore James R. Proper Coordinated Movement 
 
 
I know this sounds basic, but the hips and hand must move together and in the same direction to execute an internal energy strike. The basic mistakes when throwing a punch is to lean forward, lock the front knee out, and fall forward as you punch. This must be corrected in order to execute any type of good punch especially an internal energy punch. 
 
 
Stability 
 
 
Stability is different than balance. In order to be stable, you must be able to remain in a stationary position against resistance. The best position to be stable in the beginning is a front stance. Later, through proper use of weight shifts and straightening a leg, you can be stable in almost any position. Practice your internal energy punch slowly, against a resistance in order to make sure you are stable. It should be done slowly at first to make sure you are not compensating for lack of stability with speed and inertia. 
 
 
Proper Use of Agonistic and Antagonistic Muscles 
 
 
Antagonistic muscles are those muscles which inhibit a movement you are trying to execute. Agonistic muscles are those muscles that aid you in executing a movement. When I tell my students they must be completely relaxed when they throw an internal energy strike, I am not being completely honest. Muscles are always at some level of tension commonly known as muscle tone. In order to stand up and have our legs support us there must also be some contraction of muscles. By the way if it ever comes up, muscles can only contract, they cannot expand, although they can stretch and are more efficient in a stretched state, thus the wind up for a pitch or drawing back (or chambering) to throw a punch. 
 
 
My students seem to understand the concept of being as relaxed as possible and still staying on their feet however, therefore I allow myself this tiny fib. 
 
 
When you execute an internal energy strike it must be done with a complete totally relaxed movement and follow through. Any tension from antagonistic muscles will decrease the power of the strike and hinder the flow and follow through of the movement. The fact that an attacker is in the way of you doing a complete follow through should not hinder you from completing your relaxed, flowing follow through.

A List of Aches and Pains That No Longer Hurt #BenefitsOfSoloMartialsTraining
 
 
It's been almost two months (Sept 4th 2016) since my  Martial Arts Epiphany from God and I've rarely missed doing my 10 Minute Solo Martial Arts Drill workout found on page 22 of my downloadable eBook Solo Martial Arts Drills - For Martial Artists Who Train Alone.
 
 
It's a Very Adaptable Martial Arts Drill
 
 
For example, I hadn't been working on my flexibility and was dissatisfied with my sidekick and roundhouse kick, I added a high kicking routine to my 10 Minute Solo Martial Arts Drill. My knees weren't used to training again, so I began taking the weekends off martial arts training. I could do strictly flexibility exercises if I wanted to but, I decided to just take weekends off completely. My knees feel fine now even with doing my 10 Minute Martial Arts Drill first thing in the morning Monday through Friday.
 
 
So What Hurt That No Longer Hurts Since My 10 Minute Solo Martial Arts Drill?
 
 
My back was the main injury. I still have a gut and my back muscles had gotten weak from not executing back kicks. I recently reinjured it trying to sleep sitting up due to a slight cold. It took only days to heal instead of weeks. With both the new back injury and cold I continued to do my 10 Minute Solo Martial Arts Drill and I believe that increased my healing speed on both counts.
 
 
My left shoulder. It developed an ache from sleeping on it. It also hurt when I would do pushups with the few times I'd workout before my epiphany. 
 
 
My hip. The front of my hip would seem to catch causing me to shout out in pain and surprise.
 
 
Back of my knee. Same thing it would catch and I'd shout.
 
 
My balance. Not technically an ache and pain but, a definite reminder I was becoming an average 57 year old man. Not something I was interested in becoming.
 
 
What I'm Doing for People Now
 
 
Because of the amazing benefits from which I am once again experiencing, I'm back to teaching private in home martial arts lessons with an emphasis on helping people get into better shape and reduce their aches and pains. I Started My Solo Martial Arts Training Again
 
 
I began my solo martial arts training again after my martial arts epiphany from God, but I was having a problem. I needed a martial arts drill that 
 
 
Wouldn't take much time
Was flexible enough to cover all areas of martial arts training
Required very little equipment
Needed very little space
 
 
My Solo Martial Arts Training Drill
 
 
I chose the solo martial arts drill on page 33 of Solo Martial Arts Drills – For Martial Artists Who Train Alone is The 10 Minute Workout. I'm using 2 1/2 lb hand weights. That's all the equipment I need right now. Our new home I mentioned in my previous article on how I got started training again has a small lanai (porch) in the back. As an extra bonus it's covered so I can train when it rains. It's not very big, but you don't need much room for this martial arts drill.
 
 
I Can Tell It's Been a While Since I've Done Any Martial Arts Training
 
 
My balance is off
My core strength sucks
And my aerobic conditioning is that of a guy who spent too much time building his in home computer tutoring and virus removal business here in Honolulu Hawaii not martial arts training. Oh wait, that is me. 
 
 
But it's NEVER too late to start or to start again. It feels good to punch and kick again if only for 10 minutes or less a day. I'm going to get 
 
 
Stronger
My balance will improve
I'll be able to stop worrying about hurting my back with everything I lift.
I am still a martial artist inside, now I must bring the martial artist out from within!
 
 
I hope this motivates someone else to continue or realize it's stupid to stop. Life doesn't get in the way when martial arts and fitness ARE a part of your life. I now see the importance of this enough, where I will start teaching self-defense again.
